Grocery Stores Meeting Customer Needs but Facing Challenges
During COVID-19 Crisis

Winchester, MA : Over two-thirds of grocery store shoppers were satisfied with how their grocery store has met their needs throughout the COVID-19 crisis according to findings of a study co-sponsored by Rexer Analytics and Tele-Town Hall.

In data collected in June and July of 2020 from 190 consumers across the country, 68% of grocery store customers were ā€œvery satisfiedā€ or ā€œsatisfiedā€ with how their preferred store met their shopping needs during the early months of the crisis. Only 12% indicated they were ā€œdissatisfiedā€ and only 1% ā€œvery dissatisfiedā€ with their storeā€™s performance. Levels of shopper dissatisfaction doubled when store employees were not required to wear masks, and increased about 50% when customers were not required to wear masks.

Consumers reported their shopping was impacted in a variety of ways by COVID-19. The most notable impacts were:Ā  struggling to get certain household cleaning products (60%), feeling the impact of rising prices (45%), challenges getting specific food items (42%), and feeling nervous about contracting COVID-19 (40%).

Additionally, there has been a movement toward greater adoption of e-commerce and delivery services. Since COVID-19 became prevalent in shoppersā€™ communities, about 1 in 5 shoppers (19%) have started using e-commerce or other options to pick up pre-orders although they had not previously used these methods. Moving forward, grocery delivery services are seeing greater potential adoption. While only 34% of consumers indicated they used grocery delivery services prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, 52% indicate they will use such services for at least some of their grocery shopping needs in the future.
